Flames of Friendship

We’ve had a wonderfully busy week celebrating all things Lag B’Omer—the 33rd day of counting the Omer. This is the special time between Pesach and Shavuot when we prepare to receive the Torah. We’ve been so excited and are eagerly counting down the days!

In class, we explored the theme of Lag B’Omer in lots of creative ways. We practiced patterning bonfires, engaged in dramatic play with a pretend bonfire, and painted fiery scenes in our Levilim Gallery-inspired indoor art space. We also created drip art that looked like flames and even did a fire-themed science experiment.
We learned about Rabbi Akiva, who first began studying Torah as an adult. He was inspired when he saw water making a hole in a rock and realized that with steady effort, Torah could become a part of him. He became a great scholar—one we sing about during davening every day. Rabbi Akiva taught the importance of being kind, friendly, and loving toward one another. To reflect those values, we played a friendship color-mixing game and used water to try and make holes in rocks, just like Rabbi Akiva observed.
We also embraced the outdoor spirit of Lag B’Omer by playing games in the park. We tossed bean bags and used our gross motor skills to practice aiming at targets.
In preparation for Shavuot, we reviewed the Alef Bet by stamping Hebrew letters onto luchot—the tablets representing the Ten Commandments.
In our dramatic play area, we created an office and used typewriters and computers to practice our ABCs.
We had so much fun with music time with Benny, yoga with Ms. Ace, and Playball with Coach Anthony.
And of course, we ended the week with our favorite traditions—our Shabbos party and s'mores making for Lag Baomer.
